He Whakamāramatanga (Design Meaning)
Pūhoronuku, Pūhororangi
Pūhoro represents the journey of growth, transformation, and connection, symbolizing the path taken by our ancestors as they traversed the land and sea to reach their destinations. This design, inspired by the paintings on our ancestral waka (canoes), honours the connections and relationships formed during their voyages. The ascending pattern of this particular Pūhoro design signifies the unity between the earthly and celestial realms, reflecting how our tipuna (ancestors) understood the interconnectedness of the natural world, where the movements of the stars, moon, sun, and earth are in balance and consonance.
"Me mātau ki te whetū, i mua i te kōkiri o te haere"
"Before you set forth on a journey, be sure you know the stars."
